Wu Shuang and Gu Mian's plane made an emergency landing on a small island in southern China, just one hour’s flight away from the Philippines. There was something wrong with their fuel tank, so they had to stay on the island for repairs. After Gu Mian fixed the fuel issue, they discovered that there was no more fuel and couldn’t find any resources to replenish it. They ended up staying on the island for three days. On the third day, a fishing boat came out to sea, heading into the North Sea of the Philippines, so Wu Shuang and Gu Mian hitched a ride with them to reach their destination.
Their schedule was quite flexible, allowing them some leisure time on the island as well. The family that hosted them were Chinese; they were a middle-aged couple with a six-year-old son named Xiao Jie and a three-year-old daughter named Xiao Yu. They lived off of the husband’s fishing.
Their host was surnamed Zhang, around thirty years old, known as Old Zhang, while his wife was called Aunt Zhang. Wu Shuang got along very well with them; both parents were warm and welcoming to her, showing her around the island's scenic spots. The small island had about eighty percent of its population made up of Chinese people who lived off fishing, leading a relatively hard life.
Despite their hardship, they remained optimistic; Aunt Zhang always wore a smile on her face, never letting difficulties dampen her spirits. She worried most when her husband ventured out to sea for fishing due to the risks involved but couldn’t bear to give up fishing because it was essential for survival and she didn't have any other skills.
Wu Shuang spent each day playing with Zhang’s two children, Xiao Jie and Xiao Yu at the seaside. It was their first time seeing purple eyes, finding them beautiful and charming, quickly growing fond of Wu Shuang. They played by the sea every day.
She found an old guitar in Old Zhang's house; he used to be a master guitarist but hadn't touched it for years due to his hard life. The strings were worn out too. This guitar was once given as a gift to Aunt Zhang, who came from a cultured family and fell in love with him despite the uncertain life they led together. Seeing Aunt Zhang's smile every day, Wu Shuang knew she must never have regretted her choice.
"Can you play the guitar" Gu Mian asked curiously of Wu Shuang.
"You'll know soon enough," Wu Shuang smiled mysteriously. She wore a white sleeveless T-shirt and shorts, sitting alone on a rock with the gentle glow of sunset casting a faint light over her. Sweat trickled down her fair collarbone, adding to her seductive allure. The setting sun seemed to gild her face, making her look like a pearl rising from the sea.
Wu Shuang adjusted the strings and tried several notes before playing "The Sailor," singing along as she played. Though not an exceptionally high-quality guitar, under Wu Shuang's fingertips it came alive, producing clear tones filled with emotion; nearby fishermen were captivated by her performance. The song resonated deeply with both sailors and fishermen, sung melodically and grandly.
Her raven-black hair fluttered in the breeze as she sang—sometimes looking down, sometimes tilting back her head—the scene was enchanting, like she was immersed in a world of music alone. Gui Mian watched entranced; he vaguely remembered a similar scene several years ago when his fiancée had sat on rocks by the sea wearing a white dress and singing beautiful songs.
Lost in thought, Gui Mian picked up his camera and snapped a photo of the moment.
The twilight light, the sleek and sexy woman, her gorgeous face, flowing hair, the vast blue ocean, her rapt expression... it was like a bright yet melancholy oil painting.
Meng Wu Shuang truly stood out.
Who in this world could match up to such a woman
And who had the confidence not to be overshadowed by her presence, at that moment she was the only color in the world.
This song, "Sailor," was taught to her by Kaka when she first learned the guitar. They were on Agent Island at that time; it was an island where members of the First Terror Organization weren't supposed to wander freely, but Wushuang acted recklessly and relied on Ye Wei's privileges to visit Agent Island once to find Kaka. He happened to be resting for two days then, so he taught her this song, "Sailor."
She loves the guitar, but she is too busy to learn it. After finally mastering the guitar, she went looking for him with the intention of playing it for him. Those youthful days were indeed wonderful; when she thinks back now, even her memories are imbued with the scent of sea breeze.
Upon finishing the song, a lingering smile still played on Wushuang's lips. Ghost Mask did not dare to disturb her at this moment. Xiao Jie and Xiao Yu ran over, pulling at her arm and praising her: "Big Sister Wushuang, your guitar playing is truly amazing, and your singing is so pleasant..."
Wushuang snapped back to reality and scooped up Xiao Yu and Xiao Jie to sit beside her. With a smile, she said, "Sister will teach you."
Ghost Mask was taking pictures nearby as Wushuang taught the children how to play guitar. Suddenly, several fishing boats returned. The women waiting by the seaside waved their hands in歡呼,前幾天出海的漁民們回來了。
Wushuang wasn't particularly concerned at first; the weather had been good these past few days, so there was no significant risk of danger for those at sea. She pretty much understood the habits of the fishermen, but what truly caught her attention was the heavy smell of blood in the wind...
Ghost Mask also sensed it and both of them raised their heads to look at the returning fishing boats. A total of four fishing boats returned. One woman said nearby, "Why are there only four boats They left with ten..."
The fishing boats docked; Wushuang narrowed her eyes as one person from one of the fishing boats disembarked, covered in blood. His wife was shocked and rushed over to him, screaming. The bystanders were startled too. Then more people came off the boat, followed by several corpses being carried out...
Wushuang and Guimian exchanged a look, Xiao Jie and Xiaoyu were frightened, hurriedly running into Aunt Zhang's arms. Wushuang and Guimian rushed over to see that the body was covered in blood with more than ten bullet wounds...
Bullets
A few women rushed forward, sobbing loudly over the body. Their mournful cries even made the sea breeze seem sorrowful; fishermen returning from the sea wept silently by their side. One woman was the worst off—her husband and two sons all died in this fishing trip.
Wushuang had lived on the island for a few days, and she felt deeply moved by the fishermen's simplicity and enthusiasm. Upon seeing such a tragic scene, her heart ached as well, and she could roughly guess their predicament.
They must have crossed over to fish in foreign waters and encountered patrolling coast guards... A wave of anger welled up inside her; even if these fishermen accidentally crossed the boundary, the coast guards shouldn't fire shots. There were so many lives at stake. Due to the cruel plundering by local fishermen, the near-shore fishing grounds had become barren, driving them to venture beyond their own waters, sometimes causing unrest.
But it was usually just a matter of being expelled; who would shoot
